California Diary No.2: Lavender Fields
I’ve been working on the farm up here in the mountains in Southern CA, and am starting to settle into my summer life here. I finally get my rental car next week, and will be mobile, at which point I think everything will feel official.
So far while here I have worked hard and played hard. I’m working in a small historic building with no air conditioning or insulation, and have found that heat really zaps the energy out of me at the end of the day. But there is no time to waste, because I’ve been going out with friends for dinner, ice cream, movies, beach days…it’s been a constant stream of activities, which isn’t odd for CA folk at all. I feel like a Californian again. Lol.
One of the best parts my trip has been that my brother and sister-in-law have just moved down from Washington to San Diego, so I was able to spend time with them. One of the fun things we did was head over to Highland Springs Ranch & Inn in Cherry Valley to attend the annual lavender festival.
The festival runs all summer, coinciding with the blooming of the various varieties of lavender they have planted on the property. Just above the fields they have tents set up with lavender products, as well as all manner of lavender infused foods. I got myself a lavender lemonade and lavender lemon bar. Both were delicious!
We walked through the olive groves, smelled the lavender, and visited the thousand year old oak tree. The Ranch has been a resort since at least the 1940s, and all the buildings on the property are beautiful and historic! We climbed trees, I got stung by a cactus, and we all agreed it was a lovely, fun time!
Looking forward to many more adventures with Alexander and India this summer!
