The Best Hot Chocolate Spots In New England
Now that the holidays are upon us, and the air gets a familiar chill; our minds start to turn to the cozy comforts of the season…hot chocolate, very importantly, being one of them. There is nothing more satisfying the walking around town, Christmas shopping, with a cup of hot chocolate in your hand. It sums up the delights of the holidays and winter in one, piping hot cup.
For those of you who know me well, you know I do not drink coffee. I drink tea once in a while, but it is not my first choice. Instead, I turn to hot chocolate for a warm little pick-me-up on the cold winter days, and sometimes, I admit, on the warm summer days. I grew up drinking nestle mixed into hot water…but as I got older, I began experimenting with making my own hot chocolate from scratch, and I became hooked on good, rich hot chocolate.
Some of my favorite hot chocolate spots can be found all around New England; so I have started a list, and wanted to share those favorites with you!
L.A. Burdick - Walpole, NH, and Boston, MA
It is no secret that I love Burdick’s. Their European style sipping chocolate with a side of passion fruit cake or raspberry cake is my kind of snack. They have a few locations throughout the U.S., but their headquarters is located in Walpole, NH, and their Boston store is the cutest shop you will see anywhere.
They have many different types of chocolate to choose from for their hot chocolates, but my personal recommendation is to ask for a half-milk-half-dark hot chocolate. Their dark is so rich, and their milk is so sweet, it is better to blend the two for the best of both worlds!
The Thinking Cup - Boston, MA
This little, local chain coffee shop has locations all across Boston, and is another perfect stop to shelter from the cold winds that funnel through the city streets. Warm your hands with a cup of their delicious hot chocolate…or their french style hot chocolate, which they serve only in the winter.
Haute Coffee - Concord, MA
This little shop, just off of the main bustling downtown streets, is always busy with loyal customers who know where in Concord to go for delicious pastries and coffee. Their haute chocolate is the perfect little pick-mVe-up while you breeze in and out of the small shops and antique stores.
Vicuña - Peterborough, NH
Another small town gem is Vicuña Chocolate in Peterborough, NH. This South American inspired chocolate shop feels like Peru meets France. They are passionate about where they source their cacao beans, and truly pay homage to chocolate’s roots. Their sipping chocolate feels like a drink from the best European chocolate shop. Don’t forget to pair it with their award winning “best in New England” brownies!
Union Coffee - Milford, NH
The historic Milford Oval is the quintessential New England small-town. Just off the oval is the cozy Union Coffee shop. Union Coffee is Mayberry-meets-hipster with its gourmet coffee menu and neighborhood coffee shop vibes. Their hot chocolate hits the spot, and when you can add syrups like coconut almond…you know it’s going to be amazing.
