SNOWSHOEING IN THE WHITE MOUNTAINS
WHITE MOUNTAINS TRAVEL GUIDE | Every part of New Hampshire is beautiful, but the crème de la crème of this gorgeous state is the White Mountain range. The summer is where you can hike the green peaks, find endless swimming holes and ziplines. In the fall the thing is to take the scenic routes all over, leaf peeping and seeking out hot cider. The winter brings frozen peaks, green pines, ski days, and cabins buried in snow. I took a small day trip up north last week to do all the cozy winter things!
We first stopped for pancakes at Polly’s Pancake Parlor. It has been open and run by the same family for over 75 years, and they have created their menu to perfection. You order your pancakes by choosing what flour you want, and what add-ins you prefer. For me I have plain flour with coconut and chocolate chip add-ins. My mom chose more interesting things such as gingerbread mixture with walnut, and oatmeal and buttermilk batter with coconut and chocolate. We both ordered sides of home fries and chicken apple sausage.
With full bellies, we made our way to Bethlehem, NH, where my favorite antique store in the White Mountains is! Lonesome Woods is the most perfectly curated woodsy/cabin-y, vintage Americana antique store you will ever come across. Every corner is a picture, and every wall is plastered with pennants, snowshoes, ski run signs, and even an old Smokey the Bear sign. Nick, the owner, is a wealth of information about the local gems in the area, and can tell you anything about anything you find in his store.
I grabbed a few old New Hampshire magazines, and then we were off to the Omni Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods. The historic, red roofed hotel sits surrounded by presidential peaks, and the clear day gave us views all the way to the top of the great Mt. Washington. Armed with our snowshoes, we grabbed trail passes from the Nordic Center and hit the snowshoe and X-country ski trails that wind their way around the hotel property.
We finished off the day with hot chocolate for the car ride home from the hotel cafe. It was an all-around spectacular day, and just another reminder of why New Hampshire is so special!
