LAKE CHAMPLAIN - VISIT ADIRONDACKS
LAKE CHAMPLAIN TRAVEL GUIDE | I confess now, I have never been on a cruise. For sure I feel behind the times, but the opportunity or thought of it never really comes up whenever I plan travel. I’d love to do a transatlantic crossing one day, but a cruise has never called me…yet. But boy, oh boy, has my life been forever changed since I spent a few days traveling on the water this summer.
I took a sailboat all around Lake Champlain, and let me tell you, it might be one of my favorite modes of travel! You don’t really get a feeling of being removed from the rest of the world till you are on a boat for a few days. Even being on most islands, there is still life and society around you. On a boat, you have NOTHING but yourself and your family/friends. It was awesome!
Navtours is a great company, and I worked in partnership with them and visit Adirondacks for this trip. Navtours has sailboats for charter on Lake Champlain and in the Bahamas. We took one of their beautiful catamarans out for two nights. The boat was spacious and peaceful. There were four cabins, an indoor sitting/dining, and an outdoor sitting/dining, as well as a couple hammock/nets out in front of the boat for ultimate relaxation. Our captain Ted was amazing! He took us wherever we wanted and made recommendations all the way.
You can go to different ports, but my goal for the trip was to be away from it all, and as close to nature as possible. So Captain Ted took us to some beautiful spots to anchor each night. The first was off of Valcour Island at Bluff Point. It just so happened to be a meteor shower happening that night, so I we stayed above decks in the cool breeze, wrapped in towels, eyes glued to the heavens. I believe five was my final count before I headed to bed.
The next day was full of jumping off the top of the sailboat and into the lake, swimming, taking the dingy out at high speeds, and the best part..
…I had mentioned that I wanted to see cliffs, and Captain Ted delivered! He threw the boat fenders over the side and brought us right up against the cliffs, so close, I reached out and picked a flower growing on it. It was amazing!
We dropped anchor in Willsboro Bay, and it was only us parked there for the night! We took the dingy out to the cliffs and I got in the water and swam along them. It was a bit terrifying as you could see them going down into the water for forever, never ending. I also tried my first backflip off the boat. It was such a fail, I didn’t bother trying again.
The next morning we headed back to Plattsburgh, outrunning a rain storm along the way. I didn’t care, I just put up the hood on my jacket and sat out on the bow as we flew along the water.
It was such a memorable trip! Thanks for Visit Adirondacks and Navtours for the wonderful time!
