ADIRONDACKS
ADIRONDACKS TRAVEL GUIDE | Just outside of New England, and across a lake, are the beautiful Adirondack Mountains! I love how accessible they are, and how full of beautiful pine trees and rustic cabins. What strikes me is even though you are only an hour or two away from Vermont, you feel in a completely different place. The architecture changes dramatically, the pine trees are completely different…it’s lovely!
A few awesome friends and I stayed at White Pine Camp, an old, restored Adirondack Great Camp, that was called the summer home of Calving Coolidge. It is magnificent! There is such a peacefulness about it; the only thing to be heard is the sound of the loons on the pond, and the slamming of screen doors on the cabin porches. It is so old fashioned, with a set-your-own-pins wooden bowling alley, a Japanese tea house across the bridge next to the swimming hole…there is a boat house, an athletic field, and tennis court with an indoor/outdoor tennis house where you can lounge on wicker sofas and watch the game. Total old-world romance.
The boathouses holds the canoes and kayaks for the guest’s to take out onto the pond. and we made full use of it! The common room next to the office have maps, games, and taxidermy everywhere, and the only place on property with wifi, which means you will be disconnected most of your stay. DELIGHTFUL!
Only half an hours drive from the camp is Lake Placid! We headed there for breakfast at Dack Shack, and then enjoyed a walk around the downtown. We ate ice cream on the shore of the lake, popped in the shops, and drove to the Olympic ski jumps, where you can see jumpers practicing summer or winter!
It was the perfect little summer getaway.
